HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!!
Being the history buff that I am, here are some facts about the holiday:
-The first Thanksgiving took place in the Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts in 1621.
-The first Thanksgiving did not take place on the last Thursday of November. In reality it took place sometime between September 21 and November 11, and it lasted for 3 days.
-The pilgrims wouldn't even consider what we do every Thanksgiving an actual Thanksgiving. To them, a day of thanksgiving, was a religious holiday where one would go to church and thank God for an event, such as a battle that was won. What they did on "Thanksgiving" would have not been allowed during a religious day. They considered it a non-religious event, and would not have called it Thanksgiving.
-Thanksgiving was not originally celebrated every year. It wasn't celebrated again until 1623 when the pilgrims were fasting because of a drought, it began to rain, and they celebrated. This caught on with the rest of New England and it began to be celebrated all over.
-Thanksgiving became a national holiday in 1941
