The movie stars Kurt Russell as Wyatt Earp and Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday. It came out just 6 months before Wyatt Earp with Kevin Costner as the main man and Dennis Quaid as Doc Holliday. I've seen both movies, Wyatt Earp more times, and I have come to the consensus that Tombstone is the better movie.
I will say I really did enjoy both movies. I believe that Wyatt Earp is more historically accurate, but Tombstone was just overall more entertaining. Wyatt Earp runs around 3 hours and 18 minutes, which just makes it too long. There isn't enough action, most of the movie is about Wyatt Earp's life. On the other hand, Tombstone is an hour less at 2 hours and 13 minutes, and it contains tons more action. It deals more with Wyatt's life, but most importantly on the Gunfight at the OK Corral, and the Earp Vendetta Ride.
Not only the movie itself better, but the actors were better in Tombstone. I did enjoy Kevin Costner's portrayal of Wyatt Earp, but I thought Kurt Russell just made him seem more real. Kevin Costner made him more of a goody-goody and somewhat sad. I thought Kurt Russell made him awesome while still keeping the whole goody-goody and sadness there.
Finally, I cannot end my post without mentioning my favorite character in both movies, Doc Holliday. I prefer Val Kilmer's Doc over Dennis Quaid's, but both are still great. I probably think both are great because I just love Doc Holliday. I think he is the ultimate badass. The man has tuberculosis, but is still one of the fastest men with a gun. He can be coughing up blood but he will never turn down a fight for a good cause. He never leaves Wyatt's side when he needs him, he is his friend through and through. He also has the hottest southern accent around. I fell in love with Doc Holliday in Tombstone, and the whole illness didn't even bother me, it made him even hotter.
Overall, I would recommend both movies, but if you just want to see one, I'd say go for Tombstone. It has a great story line, great action, and great actors. Check them out next time you are in the video store or picking movies on Netflix!
I like Westerns - remember 3:10 to yuma? That's a western-hotnesses were in it such as russell crowe and christian bale. I also love The Quick and the Dead - though seeing a young leonardo caprio die in that movie, like he does in every movie!, makes me cry every time. Please stick to guys without tuberculosis next time though :)
